About Chloe
This charming older girl with a youthful attitude, highly expressive eyes and an ever-optimistic demeanor, will greatly enhance the happiness of a suitably loving home. Emerging resilient and dignified from her sad early-life as a breeding animal, Chloe is highly motivated to please her guardian, and soon will, with her easygoing and sociable nature.
She enjoys a good meal almost as much as a good walk, particularly in nature, to exercise and relax the mind and body, She currently exhibits moderate energy and good fitness - no apparent signs of arthritis or worn joints. She likes a bit of ball or frisbee, and retrieving her soft toys for you inside, but she isn't obsessive about this. She will happily retire to her cosy new bed whenever asked, as well as between outings and meals unless you want her company. She sleeps peacefully (indoors only) overnight, preferably close to her guardian's bed, and barks little, but usefully - for instance: to alert visitors at the door she is aware of them. She has a keen sense of smell, but also has displays fairly good recall once bonded - which she does readily, offering her therapeutic, warm, leaning 'hugs' to everyone with whom she senses an affinity. She reserves even greater loyalty and love for her primary carers, even as she searches for the lucky 'one'.
Chloe probably has not lived with cats, so this would require socialisation - given her retriever traits - but she did show some promise on one recent test. Cloe would likely enjoy the companionship of a similarly friendly and moderate-energy male dog, provided care is taken around their feeding - she has exhibited some competitive behaviour with unknown dogs over food. Because she is a mature female dog, Cloe won't enjoy sharing 'territory' with another female - so please don't apply if you currently have a female dog.
Due to her size (~29kgs) Cloe will need a fit and strong guardian with basic dogmanship. More particularly, someone willing and able to invest a little time and energy each day to further train Cloe not to pull on-harness. This is currently only an issue during her first 10 minutes out the door; or if she is taken on night walks, when she scents nocturnal animals and is keen to flush them out for you. Chloe also needs to learn that her new guardian will keep her and them safe when - as large dogs do - she occasionally encounters unprovoked aggression from smaller dogs, typically when she's on-leash and they're not. Her ideal guardian will reduce the likelihood of such situations arising by avoiding higher-risk locations, and by intervening to protect themself and Chloe when they do occur, so that she need not react defensively. Chloe could also benefit from gradual desensitisation to bicycles and thunderstorms - both quite manageable reactions, but nevertheless would benefit from training.
If you are ready to enjoy warm snuggles on the couch at night; fun and relaxing off-leash walks by the beach, creek or lake; and all the joy that wise, empathetic and extremely charismatic canine companionship can offer, please apply for your 28-day trial-adoption of Chloe.
